President's Reflections
 by Lynette R. F. Cowper

Hello, everyone!

The weather and illness acted to keep a lot of us away from the last
meeting, but we had a hardy few souls make an appearance. After the
meeting, we swapped a few books. I'd like to encourage everyone to bring
books to swap this month as well. Let's keep the Circulating Library of
Janus going!

This month, Master Gardener Judy Eudaly will be doing a talk on
Terraforming Earth: Home Gardening. If you've ever wanted some vegetables
that are fresher or a little different than what you can pick up at the
grocery store, you should enjoy Judy's talk.

I'm still looking for hosts for the March and April non-meeting meetings.
Don't forget later on this month is a Board meeting. If you have items for
the Board meeting agenda, be sure to get them to Andy.

And speaking of items on the calendar, in doing the calendar, I didn't
find any May birthdays in our member database. If you have a May birthday,
speak up! And, please, be sure to check your database entry.

Hope to see everyone at the meeting!

Thanks!
 Lynette R. F. Cowper
 CoJ President

Summary of the February Meeting
 by Lynette R. F. Cowper

We met on February 5 at the Jesus Metropolitan Community Church. A lot of
people were missing, but all club officers except for Kathie Thompson were
in attendance. Friends of the Cowpers, Kyle Casteel and Kaleb Jester were
there as well.

The meeting started at 7:15. We heard reports from a bunch of folks.
Important bits: Mike Suess is now InConJunction Play Director and will
need volunteers. Melissa is looking for suggestions for GoHs for 2013. We
need volunteers to man the booths for 2-hour shifts at Gay Pride and Pagan
Pride days (See Anjala if you can help out). We need folks to host
non-meeting meetings for March and April.

We tried out splitting up the announcements into sections that fell after
Communications, Old Business, and New Business. It was sort of a casual
meeting, so the time-saving aspect didn't really work out, but we might
try it again once more, with a larger attendance and tighter timeframe. We
talked about television and movies first, then later covered books,
comics, and fandom, and then handled personal announcements at the end of
the meeting.

We discussed getting new Bylaws edited and up on the web page and printed
for those who wanted printed copies. Not many did, as most people would
prefer to check them online. It was also decided that for the few copies
we were printing, all the previous changes wouldn't be included, but only
the Bylaws as they stand now.

With Kathie absent, not much happened on the question of the meeting space
agreement. Lynette encouraged everyone who'd sent SOPs to Kathie rather
than to the Board to re-send them, please, and reminded current ConCom
members and appointed positions to keep track of what they do and when, to
form an SOP of their own.

We moved to New Business. Lynette appointed or re-appointed various
positions. We'd like to firm up the Audit Committee, get more
participation in the Outreach Committee, and set up a Welcoming Committee
to embrace new members and follow up on lapsed ones. We moved the August
meeting to the 13th and appointed someone to get membership cards going.
Volunteers were solicited for the CoJ/InConJunction Booths at Gay Pride
Day (June 11) and Pagan Pride Day (Sept. 24).

The meeting ended at 8:30 and we spent some time swapping books.

Announcements from Our Members

Leigh: Leigh Kimmel's short story "Red Star, Yellow Sign" will run in
Historical Lovecraft (Innsmouth Free Press), in April 2011. And "Antigone
to the Infinite Power" will run in Potter's Field 4 (Sam's Pot
Publishing), in May 2011.

Crystal: You may not have realized it, but you have a filker in your
midst! Before you call the exterminator, sit back and have a listen to the
crazy project that she's been working on. Her first CD, "How To Be A
Superhero", will be funded solely by donations from good-hearted people
like yourself. Any pledges will be offered rewards such as free CD's,
downloads, and other goodies... and you get to decide how much you donate
and how you want to be rewarded! Every little bit helps, so even if you
can only pledge a dollar, please stop by and take a look! And if you don't
even have a dollar (hey, some of us don't), a signal boost will do
wonders. Copy and paste the web address on your blog, facebook, or
twitter, and be part of the project! If you are able to boost the signal,
make sure you let Crystal know with a link back so that she can thank you
properly. You may even end up in the liner notes of her first CD! The
kickstarter site can be found here: http://kck.st/hiTV0B (it's a teensy
link isn't it?), and you can listen to rough recordings of the tracks that
will go on the album for FREE at http://crystalwolf.bandcamp.com . And
remember... the more you donate, the better it sounds!

Melissa, Beckie, and Ricky: Beckie, Melissa, and Ricky have formed a team
for the 2011 Race for the Cure, which will be held in Indianapolis on
Saturday, April 16, and they invite you to join! The team's name is The
League of Extraordinary Gentlegeeks, and our goal is to use the power of
Geekdom to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. You can
join (or simply support) the team by going to
http://www.komenindy.org/race/ and clicking on the Join a Team button.
Search for the team name (The League of Extraordinary Gentlegeeks) and
then click on the team name when it comes up - and it will take you to a
screen where you can either Join this Team or Donate.

If you register, you have options to join as a racing member (and join our
mob of colorfully attired geeks on race day!) OR you could sign up to do
the Sleep In for the Cure - which gives you all of the warm fuzzies and
camaraderie of being a part of the team, but while allowing you to sleep
in on that day, instead. Contact Melissa if you have any questions!

A Few Cool Things to Do in Indy
 By Lynette Cowper

Mead Making 101: Learn the ropes with the owner, Brett Canaday, as he
walks you through the process of making your own handcrafted honey wine.
While there enjoy a glass of New Day and a light appetizer plate, then
take home prepared notes, recipes and supply list. Tickets: $50. Limited
to 20 attendees, must be 21 years or older, no refunds available. March 9,
6:00-8:00pm, New Day Meadery.

Kevin Smith: Red State U.S.A. Tour: Director Kevin Smith (Clerks,
Mallrats, Dogma, Chasing Amy) bucks the Hollywood trend of glitzy
premieres and the Hollywood studio system by bringing his new movie direct
to the public through a U.S.A. tour and post-screening Q&A. Ever since
Clerks (co-winner of the Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film
Festival), Kevin Smith has been known for his sharp, subversive, comedic
writing. He shifts from comedy to horror with Red State and aptly
demonstrates that good writing transcends genre. Tickets: $45, $65. March
11, Clowes Hall.

Fly A Kite: Prairie Tykes: See some 1800s-era kites and learn about flying
them. Make and decorate a kite and other paper toys that fly. Weather
permitting, we will go outside to try our kites. For ages 2-5. All
participants must be accompanied by an adult (at no charge). Reservations
are required. Cost: $12; $11, member. March 18, Conner Prairie.

Bats & Warthogs: Grand Opening: Continuing the ever growing Plains Biome
is another new permanent addition-- those knobby, hairy, tusked, wild pigs
of Africa-- the warthogs! Bats, the flying mammals often mythologized as
blood-sucking creatures that are symbols of Halloween frights, are
actually one of the most important animals in the world as part of the
pollination process of the world's plants. The new Forests exhibit will
feature two of the larger varieties of the many bats around the world, the
straw colored bat and the renowned flying fox. You will learn fascinating
facts about these unique and special animals. March 18, Indianapolis Zoo.

Five Year Mission Free Show with Hero Jr. and The Deloreans: Butler Scion
is kind enough to bring you a night of free music with Five Year Mission,
Hero Jr., and The Deloreans from Lexington, KY. Did we mention it's free?
What are you gonna do? Go to another show that night and pay a cover like
a sucker? Friday, March 18. Doors open at 8 pm, show starts at 9 pm and
goes to 1:00am. Location: Locals Only

Women and Music in Science and Concert for the Cure: Orcenith Smith
conducting. In honor of the 100th anniversary of Mme. Maria Curie's Nobel
Prize in Chemistry. Joan Tower, Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman; Edvard
Grieg, Elegiaic Melody "Hearts Wound"; Alexander Borodin, Symphony No. 2.
May 1, 3:00pm, Pike Performing Arts Center.

Incredible Costumes from Film and TV: Batman’s Bat Suit (look at those
abs!), Darth Vader’s cape and helmet (resist the dark side!), the Wicked
Witch of the West’s hat (the height of fantasy fashion!)... these are just
a few of the amazing original costumes featured in Incredible Costumes
from Film and TV. Don’t miss this limited-engagement exhibit that explores
the role of costume in defining characters from films and TV shows seen by
millions, including Blade Runner, Ghostbusters II, and Star Trek. March 12
through May 8, Children's Museum.

Mind Tripping Show: Psychological Illusions for the Mind: National Touring
performers Christian and Katalina are back at the Hilton with a fun,
surprising, interactive theatrical show called Mind Tripping:
Psychological Illusions for the Mind. They take audiences on a series of
mind-bending adventures that is pure fun and mental mayhem. The show is a
psychological thriller that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality.
It is perfect for ages 8-108. Tickets: $25, adults; $20, students and
seniors (55+). This is an intimate cabaret performance with only 40 seats
per show, so don't delay. Saturdays, March 5 through June 25. Hilton.
