President's Reflections
by Lynette R. F. Cowper
Hello, all! It's hard to believe it's May already! I've been dashing out
to my garden between rain showers, trying to get things growing in there
(Judy's talk in March was inspirational!) and enjoying all the wildflowers
growing in my yard. Kai (Megan) is headed into finals week and Ren's got
less than a month to go before he's out of school for the summer as well.
All the gardening and spring weather has gotten a story rumbling around in
my head trying to get out, so I may try to find some time to get it down
on paper (or, well, electrons) and send it off to Nathan Murrell for the
Semi-Circular of Janus. For those of you not familiar with that worthy
publication, it served as the fanzine for the CoJ for many years in paper
form before dying a quiet death. Brian Davidson put considerable effort
into trying to revive it some years ago without much success. Nathan is
giving it his attention now, but he needs submissions-- short stories,
poems, artwork, and fannish things. They should be science fiction or
fantasy related, of course.
Nathan's quick volunteerism, gardening, and the rather frightening health
scare with my dad has gotten me to thinking about how we spend our time.
Something I've always loved about the CoJ is that it is, at its heart, a
group of friends united around some loosely-related interests in various
forms of science fiction and fantasy, who get together to do this club
thing and, most of us, this convention thing. But some things keep
creeping into my awareness, like the fact that there are faces who used to
be at our meetings every month and aren't there any more. Like that we
don't really do (non-meeting) parties anymore. We are all so terribly busy
these days! I don't know whether it's just that those missing faces have
moved on to other things and that we're all happy just gathering once a
month and doing business and a bit of fun afterward, or whether other club
members are missing those people and those gatherings too.
So, I want to ask, are you all happy with the club the way it is or do we
want to do more? I know gas is expensive and the economy has been hard on
some of us. Maybe it's unreasonable to expect more than a once-a-month
commitment to the club from most of us. Maybe we need to look into other
options-- electronic gatherings of some sort, for instance. I'm open to
ideas.
While I like that the club sends birthday cards, a note from an individual
still has more impact. I'd ask those of you who've been in the club for a
while-- officer or not-- to look around, look for those absences, and
maybe drop an email or a card or a call to those people and tell them you
miss them. Let's not lose sight of our friendships in the midst of the
business of being a club.
Lynette R. F. Cowper, CoJ President

Summary of the April Meeting
by Lynette R. F. Cowper
The club met on April 2 at the LifeJourney Church (formerly Jesus
Metropolitan Community Church). All the officers were there except
ConChair for InConJunction 32 (2012) Kathie Thompson and Treasurer Emily
Rodgers (though Emily was there for the ConCom meeting and passed out her
report before leaving). We didn't have any guests or new members, though
we were happy to have longtime-but-not-often-with-us member Rob Pyatt
present. Lynette opened by explaining that her father had just gone in to
the hospital with heart problems which was why she was
less-than-organized.
We did the Treasurer and minutes thing and then heard from Mike Cowper on
InConJunction 31. He's confirmed as GoHs Catherine Asaro, Donald Woolcott,
and David Lee Pancake. He'd been contacted by the agent for Joe Flanigan
of Stargate Atlantis about him coming to InConJunction and was looking at
how to budget for it. Mike Suess was looking for actors for the play and
Kyra was needing volunteers for ConSuite. Unfortunately, last year some of
her volunteers were treated very rudely-- often by members of the CoJ and
ConCom-- and so she had several that weren't volunteering again because of
it. Kyra reminded everyone that, by our contract with the hotel, we cannot
serve regular food in the ConSuite. It is purely for munchies and drinks.
Andy went over what the Board had talked about at their last meeting and
then we heard from Member Services and Member Activities. Anjala reminded
everyone that she needs help with the CoJ/ InConJunction booth at Gay
Pride on June 11th and John went over the name change for the church, from
Jesus Metropolitan Community Church to LifeJourney Church.
Nathan Murrell announced he would be taking over as editor of the
Semi-Circular of Janus and was looking for submissions of short stories,
artwork, poems, and other science fiction and fantasy related materials.
You can email him at: fanzine at circleofjanus.org
And that was the meeting!
