Summary of the February Club Meeting
 by Lynette Cowper

The club met on February 4 at Valley Mills Christian Church. All officers
were present except InCon 37 Joe Greene. There were 21-ish adults and 3
kids present. We had no guests.

The January meeting minutes were approved as published. We got a
Treasurer's Report, then moved to convention reports.

Joe wasn't present to report for 2017, but Beckie reports the registration
numbers are about the same as last year. Rob Pyatt is moving and won't be
there. Programming is looking for interesting stuff to fill the gaps left
by Weird Science and some others. Beckie reported for 2018 that she's
lined up a masq judge, our Author GoH's wife. For 2019, John reports he
has a verbal agreement with Mike Mason.

Mike Cowper reported on the last Board meeting. In committees, Lynette
reported for Outreach that she was going to register for Pride after the
meeting and is still waiting for Stuart Sayger on bookmarks. Member
Services is working on stuff. There were no reports from the Archivist,
Audit Committee, Quartermaster, and Webmaster.

In Old Business, Jeremy has gotten the info from Randy on the Kilgore
Trout Fan Club for the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and will send a check soon.

In New Business, Jeremy has member cards, and all the 2016 appointees are
staying on for 2017. We then looked at club activities. For February
Non-meeting, we had the February 11th Roller Derby bout and crafts with
Kat. Ricky was going to talk to Judy Chambers about cookie baking for the
Ronald McDonald House. In suggestions for the March Post-meeting, we had a
Nerf war, skincare and makeup talk/demo, Doctor Seuss themed event, or
something for Rob. We settled on the Doctor Seuss thing. For the March
Non-meeting, Mel mentioned the drive-in is opening in March. Who’s Yer Con
on March 31 was also mentioned. For the April Post-Meeting, we're doing
Pysanky.

In Announcements, Kat's mom passed on Tuesday. She thanks everyone who
came to the visitation. Her granddaughters also have Girl Scout cookies
for sale! Randy has been looking at Airbnb as a cheaper alternative to
hotel stays, wants to know if anyone has had experience. John talked about
PuppyBowl. And Anjala mentioned Dill hurt himself and is having surgery on
his legs.

And that was it for February!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program
that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on
March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. In that
spirit, I encourage everyone to bring your favorite book, wear a silly
hat, eat something green, and celebrate and share the things you love to
read!

I had hoped to find a local event for the group to participate in however
I didn't find any that would have worked for us and there wasn't time to
create our own event on the proper day. However, being that our meeting is
two days after March 2, that is why I thought this could be a fun way for
everyone to share a little about their literary likes or to just have fun
celebrating Dr. Seuss stories and characters. If anyone is up for it, feel
free to read a short story, poem, or just hold up a book and say why you
like it. The floor will be open to whoever wishes to use it. As always
there will be snacks, including colorful cupcakes (if i can find them), so
please feed the kitty, and of course, games are more than welcome once
chaos has been declared.

Ricky

usually producing about 20 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced
by dust particles left behind by comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher, which was
discovered in 1861. The shower runs annually from April 16-25. It peaks
this year on the night of the night of the 22nd and morning of the
23rd. These meteors can sometimes produce bright dust trails that last
for several seconds. The crescent moon should not be too much of a
problem this year. Skies should still be dark enough for a good show.
Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will
radiate from the constellation Lyra, but can appear anywhere in the
sky.

average shower, capable of producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its
peak. Most of the activity is seen in the Southern Hemisphere. In the
Northern Hemisphere, the rate can reach about 30 meteors per hour. It
is produced by dust particles left behind by comet Halley, which has
known and observed since ancient times. The shower runs annually from
April 19 to May 28. It peaks this year on the night of May 6 and the
morning of the May 7. The waxing gibbous moon will block out many of
the fainter meteors this year. But if you are patient, you should be
able to catch quite a few of the brighter ones. Best viewing will be
from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the
constellation Aquarius, but can appear anywhere in the sky.
