Writers' Critique Workshop

Have you ever wanted a critical evaluation of your writing by a professional editor? Have you ever wanted some insight into how you can polish your work to better prepare it for submission for publication? Well this year at InConJunction, you can!

Lou Harry, Editor in Chief for Indy Men's Magazine, has offered to hold a Writers' Critique Workshop at InConJunction. Mr. Harry is not only a professional editor, but he's also run similar workshops as part of the Midwest Writers Workshop and is a published author himself. As part of his job at Indy Men's Magazine he consulted with writers and purchased fiction from such notables as David Gerrold, David Brin, Gregory Benford and Williams F. Nolan.

As part of this workshop, Mr. Harry will review and provide written comments for up to 6 pages (2,000 words) of a manuscript. In addition, at the convention Mr. Harry will spend 15 minutes in a private session with each author discussion their manuscript, their writing style, and techniques they can use to improve their chances of acceptance for publication. Mr. Harry wants to especially emphasize that the point of these sessions isn't to empower writers or pat them on the back. The point is to give you an honest assessment of your work and helpful tips from the point of view of an editor trying to decide whether to purchase your stories for publication.

The work submitted may be completed or in progress. (Sorry, no screenwriting or plays accepted.) A workshop participant may submit only one work consisting of no more than six pages (or a maximum of 2000 words). All submissions should be keyboarded (typed, word processed, or computerized) in appropriate manuscript format, double spaced, and include the participants name and contact information on a separate page. Manuscripts will be accepted on a "first come" basis and no manuscript will be accepted for this program after Friday June 31, 2006. Mr. Harry needs plenty of time before the convention to appropriately review each manuscript.

The Writers' Critique Workshop requires a pre-registration fee of $25 in addition to the regular InConJunction registration fee. Payments can be made online via Paypal from the link on the InConJunction Registration page. All funds are 100% refundable at the convention in the unfortunate event that Mr. Harry is unable to attend. After pre-registering, attendees should send their printed manuscript to:

Note: It is the responsibility of each attendee to ensure their manuscript reaches Mr. Harry for critique. All discussion sessions between participants and Mr. Harry will be conducted during the three days of the convention. Once Mr. Harry has received a submitted manuscript, he will personally contact each participant to set the day and time for each evaluation during the convention. It is the responsibility of the participant to arrive for the set evaluation session on time. Because of the number of evaluation sessions to be held during the convention, rescheduling will not be possible.
