Presidential Ponderings

Hello to everyone out there. It is that time of year again when we get to 
celebrate the hard work for the convention with the "After the Con Bash." 
There will be a lot of relaxing and just having fun. There is a chance I 
will be there (hopefully as I am currently on disability for the car 
accident) but we will try. I want to thank everyone for their well wishes 
and kind thoughts, positive energy, and prayers.

InConJunction 29 Convention Report:
    Thanks were extended to all who helped.
    Final count was around 400 paid attendees and fewer than 100 comps.
    (Randy Porter reported that Origins was down 14%, expected to be down 
20%.)
    Surveys were mostly positive.
    The After-the-Con Bash will be 9/12/2009 at the Cowpers' house.

InConJunction 30 Convention Report:
    Not present.

InConJunction 31 Convention Report:
    Still planning to have a convention.

    Birthday cards are going out.

    Randy Porter will present tonight on the history of Gen Con.

    Bylaws:
       Bylaws, Grammar, and Spelling had no report, but was tasked to have 
something to present at the next board meeting (9/15/2009).

    Anniversary Party:
       The Fountainhead Apartments clubhouse was considered for the 30th 
Anniversary Party.
       The members present voted to accept that location.

New Business:
    Email List:
       The use of the email list was discussed. A monthly CoJ etiquette 
email was proposed.

Chaos was temporarily declared at 7:38pm for Randy Porter to speak. Chaos 
was ended at 8:28pm.

Announcements:
    Mike Cowper: Feed the kitty!
    John Belden: Spoke about Indy Fringe Festival.
    Randy Porter: A Poe expert will speak here.
    Mike Suess: The next ASH comics show is 8/30/2009.

A Few Cool Things to Do in Indy

Heritage Festivals: Indianapolis boasts a bunch of heritage festivals with 
great food, dancing, art, and more. Here's a selection:
    Indy Irish Festival: Sep 18 to 20, Military Park. $20 for the weekend, 
various day rates.
    Fiesta Indianapolis: Sep. 19, American Legion Mall. Free.

Fishers Renaissance Faire: Celebrate and experience the period of 
16th-century Renaissance at the 5th annual Faire! Guests are welcome to 
come dressed in Renaissance era costume. $8, adults 13 and over; $5, 
children 5-12; free, children 4 and under. Oct 3 & 4, Conner Prairie.

Ug! The Caveman Musical: Ug and his feisty tribe of Neanderthals are 
feasting on a tasty dinner of wild boar when he decides to tell one of his 
many feats of bravery by reenacting the event. "Pretend it isn't now," he 
tells them, "pretend it is then!" Without knowing it, Ug has invented 
theater, an entirely new way of telling stories. The tribe all agrees that 
this thing Ug calls a "play" is so lifelike and gripping, no one will ever 
want to have a story told any other way. This show is family friendly with 
PG content! $25, adults; $20, seniors 62 and over, full-time students and 
military personnel. Weekends, Sept 18 through October 17, Theatre on the 
Square.

Bouchercon 2009: Bouchercon celebrates the mystery genre and is the 
largest annual meeting in the world for mystery lovers. The convention 
program includes panel discussions, lectures, and other presentations by 
mystery writers and experts on the genre, covering all aspects of mystery 
fiction, thrillers, detective stories, suspense novels, and more. The 2009 
Bouchercon will include special events throughout central Indiana, 
including programs at some of our area's most popular and outstanding 
venues. Sessions are scheduled for the Eiteljorg Museum of American 
Indians and Western Art, the rotunda of Indiana's state house building, 
the Indianapolis City Market, and more. Basic registration for the 2009 
Bouchercon in Indianapolis is $150. The committee plans to offer a reduced 
price for students and families attending the children's programming only, 
and single-day registrations for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday if space 
is available. October 15 - 18, 2009, Hyatt Regency.

The Flame of Love: The Legend of Tristan and Iseult: Featuring Patrick 
Ball and the Medieval Beasts.  The long, dark nights of Medieval Europe 
were rich with stories. But one legend was told and beloved beyond all 
others, The Romance of Tristan and Iseult. Filled with love, passion, 
magic and death, it captivated the listeners because it was the very 
mirror of their own hearts, minds and souls. And to raise the telling 
beyond the power of words there was music: the vielle, the harp, the drum, 
the psaltery and the singing voice. All this made for evenings of 
brilliance and enchantment throughout the Dark Ages. Advance Tickets: $20, 
Door: $25. Oct 25, Indiana History Center.

Nosferatu Film Screening: Nosferatu is one of the first horror films in 
movie history and a great early example of stylistic, rather than 
realistic, cinema. Based heavily on Bram Stoker's Dracula, Murnau's 
atmospheric, visually striking film follows Count Orlok (Max Schreck), a 
reclusive, grotesque nobleman with very vampiric habits. The bloodthirsty 
fellow wreaks havoc on a curious couple. Shown in 16mm. A short pre-film 
talk will be given by Butler University Fairbanks Professor and Media Arts 
Department Chair, Kenneth Creech. Live soundtrack performed by Ensemble 
48. Members $5, Public $9, students free with ID. Oct. 29, Indianapolis 
Museum of Art.

Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs: A new exhibition 
featuring more than 130 treasures from the tomb of the celebrated pharaoh 
Tutankhamun and additional ancient sites. Through Oct 31, Children's 
Museum.

Gardens of the Far East: Travel to the Far East in this Asian-inspired 
show. The Indianapolis Zoo's White River Gardens Hilbert Conservatory will 
be filled with bonsai plants from the Bonsai Club of Indianapolis, as well 
as a variety of Asian-inspired plants. Sept. 26 through Nov. 8, 
Indianapolis Zoo.

The Giver: An adaptation of the popular book teens can't seem to put down. 
This thought-provoking production drops you into the utopian world of 
twelve-year old Jonas as he is chosen to be the Receiver of Memories and 
hold the community's long-forgotten memories of joy and pain. The truth is 
told. The harrowing journey begins. Fridays and Saturdays, Oct 23. through 
Nov. 21, Indiana Repertory Theatre.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Exhibition: The exhibition features artwork, 
costumes and other pieces used in the concept and production for Star 
Wars: The Clone Wars. There'll be a life size Jedi fighter in the Welcome 
Center. The exhibit itself will be in the lower level by the planetarium. 
There are life-size flats of Anakin, Yoda, Ahsoka and other characters 
next to which visitors can pose for pictures. Through Jan 31, 2010, 
Children's Museum.
